In 1854, Butler County was subdivided again, and as a result, Buffalo Township became the largest township in the county. It is located in the southeast portion of Buffalo County approximately 26 miles from downtown Pittsburgh. A man named George Bell from Ireland is credited as being the first European to settle in the area. Another influential pioneer, also an Irishman, was Robert Elliot from Westmoreland County. Elliot brought with him his family and some sapling fruit trees. As mills began popping up in the area, more people started relocating to the area. Before European settlement, the various Native American tribes who inhabited these lands found the soil fertile and game animals such as deer plentiful. These attributes made building a life in Butler County easier than in other areas of the country. Buffalo Township was finally incorporated in 1803.
