In the late 17th century, William Penn, the son of Sir William Penn, a Royal Navy Officer, acquired land from the local Native Americans. They observed certain places within the acreage contained varying levels of surface water depending on the season. This part of Richland became known as the “Great Swamp,” which can be found on the earlier maps. Today, it’s known as the “Quakertown Swamp.” Richland was finally incorporated under the definition of a township in 1734.
