Richland Township Homes and Condos for Sale

In the late 17th century, William Penn, the son of Sir William Penn, a Royal Navy Officer, acquired land from the local Native Americans. Today, that same area of land is known as “Bucks County.” In those days, the Native Americans didn’t measure land area by specific methods of measurement but rather used the distance someone could travel by foot or horseback in certain time frames. In 1703, Penn hired surveyors to lay out 10,000 acres, which he called Manor of Richland. Since the Native Americans were masters of land cultivation, the soil was very fertile. Thus Penn called the area “Rich Lands.” In 1735, Penn had Manor of Richland surveyed once more and was shocked to find out it contained 16,749 acres. Once people began to settle permanently in Manor of Richland, the mystery of the extra 6,749 acres was solved. They observed certain places within the acreage contained varying levels of surface water depending on the season. This part of Richland became known as the “Great Swamp,” which can be found on the earlier maps. Today, it’s known as the “Quakertown Swamp.” Richland was finally incorporated under the definition of a township in 1734.
