When the Country of Allegheny was created in 1788, its new boundaries cut into some preexisting areas, such as Washington and Westmoreland Counties, as well as significant portions of the Depreciated Lands west of the Allegheny River and north of the Ohio River. Additionally, Allegheny County underwent further expansion in 1789, further encroaching on its neighbors and swallowing up entire municipalities. But this would be the end of the region’s propensity towards moving borders around. When it was all said and done, the county was comprised of seven townships, the biggest of them being Pitt Township, which covered the majority of Allegheny County’s northern region. In 1796, Pitt Township was divided in two, forming Deer and Pine Townships. In 1805, Deer Township was split in half to create Indiana Township. In 1836, the citizens of Deer Township positioned to divide the area up once more, which eventually became West Dear and East Dear. In 1860, the western border of West Deer was expanded toward the east, forming Richland Township as a result. After several more border rearrangements, you have the West Deer known today.
