McCandless is a town nestled in the northwestern portion of Allegheny County and is a Home Rule Municipality. With a population hovering around 29,000, it has ranked towards the top of Money Magazine’s list of “Best Places to Live.” On January 1, 1975, its status was changed from “McCandless Township” to the “Town of McCandless after obtaining a home rule charter from the State of Pennsylvania. And even though McCandless hasn’t operated under the First Class Township Code for quite some time, it remains classified as such for specific reasons. Another interesting fact is that the word “town” is not included in Pennsylvania’s list of municipal units, which often causes some confusion for those who are not aware of this fact. On the other hand, there is Bloomsburg in Columbia County that was incorporated in 1870 under the official classification of town and is still recognized as one till this day. Historically, the land that became present-day McCandless belonged to a man named James Duff. The 400-acre piece of land Duff owned was used for farming purposes. As the local farming industry grew, residents of the area held a meeting in 1849 and decided to form a local government. Originally called “Taylor Township,” it was founded in 1851. In 1857, it was changed to “McCandless Township” after one of the District Judges, Wilson McCandless.
