Founded in 1804, Connoquenessing Township is located in Butler County and is named after Connoquenessing Creek, which was named by the local Native Americans living there. The word “connoquenessing” can be translated to mean “for a long way straight.” Connoquenessing Township was one of the four original townships first to be established in Butler County but was called “Petersville” in the beginning after the first settler to the area, Peter McKinney. McKinney moved to the area in 1792 with his wife and kids. His daughter was born on March 10 of the same year and is said to be the first European child born in Butler County. Like many of the other townships in Butler County and the surrounding areas, Connoquenessing Township underwent a few divisions: In 1804, it was reduced by nine square miles; in 1842, it was divided into West and East Connoquenessing; in 1854, the township was reduced one final time to its present area of around 23 square miles. The terrain here is notably hilly, with farming and oil production being two of the most significant industries for quite some time, while coal mining was far less than in neighboring townships. In 1889, one of North America’s largest and most productive oil fields opened on the Humphrey farm, called the “Hundred-Foot” oil field.
