In 1803, a pietist named Johann Georg Rapp, along with followers from his Harmony Society, moved to the United States from Württemberg, Germany, to escape religious persecution. Rapp was looking for a quiet place far from others where he and his followers could practice their religion and live off the land without being affected by outside influences. At some point in 1804, the Harmonites arrived in Butler County and purchased a large piece of rural area that is now modern-day Harmony Borough. In 1805, the group officially established the Harmony Society and stayed in Pennsylvania for approximately a decade. In 1814, a Mennonite by the name of Abraham Ziegler purchased the property from the Harmony Society, which moved their organization to Indiana and built another town of the same name on the Wabash River. Today, that town is known as New Harmony. By the time the 20th century rolled around, the Mennonites had sold most of their land piece-by-piece until all they had left was a small plot of land on a hill where they conducted services in a meeting house.
