Before the arrival of Europeans in the area of modern-day Fox Chapel, it was controlled primarily by the Seneca Native Americans. The Seneca thrived off of hunting the wild game that was in abundance in these parts; fishing was also a big part of their culture, as well as farming the fertile soil. Then a time came when Virginia and Pennsylvania both staked their claim on the area. It wasn’t until the end of the Revolutionary War that the dispute was settled, resulting in it becoming a part of Pennsylvania. Historians have said that it is very probable that George Washington and Christopher Gist traveled through the area of Fox Chapel Township around December 1753. Washington had just come from Fort Le Boeuf where he had delivered a letter from the Governor of Virginia, Robert Dinwiddie, ordering the French commandant Jacques Legardeur de Saint-Pierre to return to Canada. Washington was only 21 at the time. In 1790, it was said the first European settler, a man named James Powers, arrived in the area. Before Fox Chapel Township was incorporated on August 3, 1934, it had been a part of Indiana and O’Hara Townships. The township was named after a German immigrant named John Fox who moved to the area in 1831.
