Ohio Township is situated in Allegheny County and was named after the Ohio River. It is a Second Class Township, meaning that, rather than giving the citizens the power to vote one much of the town’s matters, the town is governed by six elected supervisors. These supervisors hold a term of six years. This means that the day-to-day affairs of the town are under these six supervisors control, which includes the Recreation Department, Road Department, the Administration Office, as well as the police and fire departments. Located only nine miles from downtown Pittsburgh to the northwest, Ohio Township maintains a quaint, small-town environment with a population of approximately 5,000. Within the last several years, Ohio Township has experienced some decent growth, with retail shops and restaurants popping up around the Camp Horne Road area near that I-279 Interchange. Historically, the land now known as present-day Ohio Township was situated on the side of the Ohio River controlled by Native Americans all the way until the beginning of the 19th century. The first settler recorded in the town’s history to have moved into the area was a man named William Richey in 1801. The actual town was formed two years later in 1803.
