Established in 1861, Hampton Township is a quaint, picturesque community located in the northern portion of Allegheny County. The first settlers to establish themselves here arrived during the mid to late 1700s after the Revolutionary War. Around the same time, a town called Talley Cavey was founded, a place mostly inhabited by hunters and fur trappers who were in search of better game in the forests north of the Allegheny River. In 1794, a man named John McCaslin was one of the first people to purchase land in the area. Today, the land McCaslin bought is known as Oak Hill Farms. It wasn’t long before other early settlers joined McCaslin, such as Frank Black, Alex McDonald, John McNeal, Robert Horde, William and Henry McCully, as well as Robert and James Sample. Many of the geographic landmarks have been named after these early Pennsylvanian pioneers, including roadways, parks, and historic buildings. In addition to that, ancestors of some of these men still live in Hampton Township today.
