Zelienople Borough Homes and Condos for Sale

In 1802, Baron Dettmar Basse moved to Pennsylvania from Frankfurt am Main, Germany. He was among a large number of Germans fleeing the hardships of Germany in those days. Basse purchased a 10,000-acre tract of land that spanned Butler and Beaver Counties. He had a village platted and built a massive three-story castle named “The Bassenheim.” This castle resembled castles from the dark ages, complete with battlements, turrets, and even tall towers. Unfortunately, the castle was destroyed by fire at some point in 1842. Basse had a daughter named Fredericka but was known by most as “Zelie,” a name she gave herself after one of her favorite dolls as a child. Basse named his village after this moniker. In 1807, Zelie married a man named Philipp Passavant. When Basse returned to Germany in 1818, he left his business in the hands of Passavant. For decades, the small town only grew marginally. Nevertheless, when passenger trains from Pittsburg began making regular stops in Zelienople, the population grew rapidly, as did the commerce. Zelienople was incorporated as a borough in 1840.
