In 1832, two brothers from Germany, Friedrich Carl Roebling, and John A. Roebling established a small farming community called “Germania” where present-day Saxonburg Borough is now located. The two men migrated from Prussia, Germany, in 1831 with a group of people fleeing the political unrest and oppression Germans in those days suffered. On October 28, 1831, Roebling brothers purchased 1,582 acres from a frontier woman named Sarah Collins. Friedrich Roebling had been an engineer in Germany but became a farmer during his first few years living in America. Nevertheless, Friedrich found his way back into being an engineer, which led him to invent a new method of producing wire cable. He used his invention in many projects, one being an aqueduct. Another world-changing invention comes out of Saxonburg as well: In 1920, KDKA Radio began broadcasting the world’s first commercial radio broadcast. It later moved to Clinton Township.
